PAMPHYLIA. Side. Circa 205-100 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 30 mm, 15.92 g, 12 h), Dei..., magistrate, circa 200-190. Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet; on bowl, countermark: Seleukid anchor within oval incuse; behind, countermark: bee within oval incuse. Rev. Nike advancing to left, holding wreath in her right hand; to left, pomegranate above ΔΕΙ. Leu Web Auction 5 (2018), 303. SNG Paris 672 var. (differing magistrate). Lightly toned. Faint scratches and minor traces of corrosion and with some delamination on the obverse, otherwise, fine.

From a German collection, privately acquired from Dr. Michael Brandt in the late 1990s and early 2000s.


While the anchor countermark was applied by Seleukid authorities, the bee is the coat-of-arms of Ephesos. It is part of a series of similar countermarks used by a number of cities to revaluate old Attic weight coins to the cistophoric coinage introduced in circa 180 BC.
